At South Point, every strain begins with a meticulous search for cultivars that can thrive in our unique hybrid greenhouse and deliver a distinctive experience. Genetics are the blueprint for everything – aroma, flavour, potency, and structure – and we prioritize expression over hype. We grow what performs, not what trends.
It’s a process that’s part science, part instinct, and all passion. From initial seed runs to small-scale test grows, our cultivation team studies how each plant responds to light, humidity, and feeding cycles to identify which genetics deserve to move forward. Because if we want to deliver quality flower consistently, it starts with choosing cultivars built for it.
EXPRESSION TESTING
Our genetic selection process starts small, with promising cultivars sourced from trusted breeders in limited test runs at our facility in Leamington, Ontario. Each one is grown under identical conditions in our hybrid greenhouse, allowing us to see its true personality. We’re closely monitoring growth, structure, flower development, trichome quality, and standout terpene expression – ideally the kind you can smell from across the room.
Once the plants reach maturity, we evaluate trichome density, bud shape, colour, cycle times, and yield. The goal is to find strong, vigorous cultivars that respond naturally well to our controlled environment – where sunlight meets precision technology. Only those that deliver repeatable, stable quality with extraordinary flavour and remarkable cannabinoid and terpene output move forward. Every keeper strain we grow earns its place through performance, not popularity.
